ITN News Anchor attacked by Pandura POLICE

Yesterday May 8, 2011, Niroshan Premaratne, a well known News Anchor attached to Govt. Television Net work, ITN was subjected to torture by Panadura Police. He is a news presenter who supports Govt. without borders, is still warded at Kalubowila Teaching Hospital.

According to the latest news, Govt. has taken prompt action against the HQI of Panaduar Police, by transferring him out of Panadura. Many helpless people are harassed, tortured, ill treated and involved in fabricated charges everyday, by Srilankan Police including Panaduara Police. However, these people made complains to relevant authorities, but no action was taken against Police brutalities. Nevertheless, they were safe guarded by the blessings of high authorities and as a fact that these police perpetrates are being protected and encouraged to continue with their usual torture activities.

We condemn vehemently the brutal act of Panadura Police performed against Niroshan, but in one way we are happy to notice that even top Govt. supporters, are spared in lime light by police. The prevalence of present situation is in fact, to double the stranded of media followed when they reporting police torture, inhuman and ill treatment cases.

We hope that Niroshan will take due legal action against the police who tortured him. But we are not sure as earlier Journalists who were battered by police came to amicable settlements and were given pardons. This will assist and encourage increasing police brutality in the country.

We also request the IGP and the relevant authorities to stop police torture immediately and give publicly a statement accepting and condemning police brutalities.
